Like you, I also went through the experience of being laid off as a marketing manager of a 500 Fortune company, after being told and congratulated a day BEFORE as an awesome team, go figure. Fortunately, before I was hired, I had decided to keep a couple of clients I had had for years on my own, as a freelancer. That acted as a good insurance policy against the politics and bad decisions that come with large companies. Now I'm a full-time freelancer again and loving.

This is very interesting. I am still starting out in seo and improving my skills. When you have monthly retainer clients, what do you do for them month after month? Do you have a checklist you follow like month 1, i will do this and that. Month 2 i will do this and that.
I'm massively sympathetic to this situation. I have a big feeling that 'force jabbing' may lead to me having to go out fully on my own (Been 50/50 for many years), but the security of family is #1!
This is ok for some people who had some great connections and 10yrs of experience in the field before starting freelance. Starting freelance from 0 is on another level then sending email to connections and getting immediate work.
